PowerTalk
Gary Shapiro, President & CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association

Fellow Investor,

This week’s PowerTalk interview is with Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, an industry trade group boasts more than 2,000 members – from startup entrepreneurs to Google.  Gary is also the author of two books – The Comeback: How Innovation Will Restore the American Dream and the upcoming Ninja Innovation: The Ten Killer Strategies of the World’s Most Successful Businesses, due out on January 8th.

These days consumer electronics make up what I call “the new fabric of our lives”, with the average American family having 25 consumer electronic products.  In fact, data shows that 3 out of 4 holiday gift givers plan to buy an electronic product this year.  Gary takes us through some of the big products of the season.

We’ll also talk about what to expect at the widely anticipated Consumer Electronics Show coming up in January.  It’s the world’s largest annual trade show with 3,000 exhibitors and over 160,000 people from various parts of the electronics industry in attendance.  This year’s hot topics are expected to include new “Ultra HD” high resolution TVs, wireless healthcare (a key driver of my Living Longer Lives PowerTrend), touch and gesture technologies and automotive consumer electronics.

Gary’s 20 years of experience with consumer electronics have given him some fascinating insights into the role technology and innovation plays in driving our country and our economy forward.  The interview is a wonderful talk on how consumer electronics have come to permeate every facet of our lives, so let’s get too it.

It’s a fascinating interview that provides serious insights into a company with plenty of room to run – and a clear plan for exactly where they want to go, and how they are going to get there.

Sincerely,

Chris Versace

Fellow investors,

I recently spoke with Bahram Yusefzadeh, Chairman and CEO of Red Lambda, and William Ronca, EVP - Global Sales, Marketing and Business Development at Red Lambda, about the use of Big Data and Cyber Security. In information technology lingo, big data is a loosely-defined term used to describe data sets so large and complex that they become awkward to work with using on-hand database management tools. Difficulties include capture, storage, search, sharing, analysis, and visualization

Yet Red Lambda has harnessed the power of big data to move Cyber Security from being reactive to being proactive. As I say, you react with a good defense, but to be secure you have to be proactive and Red Lambda is using that to differentiate its solutions from others including Sourcefire (FIRE), Symantec (SYMC),  Fortinet (FTNT) and others. With cyber attacks hitting institutions of all sizes - from Google (GOOG) to Northrop Grumman (NOC) the stakes are high as we increasingly move into the digital world and migrate more of our data into the cloud be it with Apple (AAPL), Google, Amazon.com (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT) or others.

Listen up.

Hey everyone,

I recently spoke with Stephen Candelmo, the CEO and one of the founders of Klaggle. Your probably wondering  much the way I did when I first heard that word a- what's a klaggle? Well Stephen sets us straight on that as well as tells us not only what the company is doing but how it's solutions will change the way we shop and find content online. In short, Klaggle could one day be a verb much the way we use "Google" as a word - "I'll just google it" could one day be "I better klaggle that."

Big implications for movies, music, books, and other online shopping experiences so watch out Amazon, Best Buy and HH Gregg, but it doesn't stop there and as you'll see, it has implications for news, magazines and more.

Give it a listen.

Hey Everyone,

This is our latest 2020Talk with James Nolan, EVP of InterDigital's (IDCC) R&D Team. InterDigital is a key patent holder in both 3G WCDMA and 4G LTE Technologies. Jim does a great job of explaining what each of the mobile technologies really is and what the transition means to mobile carriers, device manufacturers not to mention potential pain points along the way.

Good stuff all the way around and very insightful for companies, investors and more.

Give it a listen.

Hey everyone,

It seems like a day doesn't go by the we don't hear about a company or major instituion getting hacked. Clearly cyber attacks are on the rise and whether your a large company, institution, individual or some other entity - you need to protect yourself.

Visting with us today to talk about all of this and make sense of it is:

  • Kevin Freeman, author of Secret Weapon: How Economic Terrorism Brought Down the U.S. Stock Market and Why It can Happen Again; and
  • Steven Sprague, President and CEO of Wave Systems Corp. (WAVX)

Give it a listen.

Hey everyone,

Today we're talking with Nicole Gelinas, the Searle Freedom Trust Fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor of City Journal, on Wall Street reform and the Dodd-Frank Bill. In addition to the headline regulatory changes covering capital investment by banks and insurance companies, the Act introduces new regulation of hedge funds and private equity funds, alters the definition of accredited investors, requires reporting by all public companies on CEO to median employee pay ratios and other compensation data, enforces equitable access to credit for consumers, and provides incentives to promote banking among low- and medium-income residents.

Nicole does a great job breaking it all down for us and telling us what it really means - give it a listen!
